The horror genre has gone through an interesting evolution over the decades. There have been watered down PG-13 horror movies, satires, parodies and found footage, but a truly unique form of horror storytelling appears every so often and it is a fusion of horror and musical (like Repo! The Genetic Opera). The newest incarnation of such a monster is The Devil’s Carnival, a horror concert event currently on a cross country tour in true Rocky Horror fashion, tickets are on sale now.
Filmmakers Darren Lynn Bousman and Terrance Zdunich (Repo! The Genetic Opera) have collaborated again for The Devil’s Carnival, a horror musical of truly macabre proportions. The film is about a handful of sinners who meet their demise and are sent to hell where they encounter Lucifer and other devilish characters in a sick twisted carnival which might give Tim Burton a run for his money.
Featuring twelve original songs written by Zdunich and Saar Hendelman (Insidious) and an eclectic cast which includes Victoriandustrial rocker Emile Autumn, Dayton Callie (Sons of Anarchy), Slipknot member M. Shawn “Clown” Crahan, Briana Evigan (Step Up 2), Sean Patrick Flannery (The Boondock Saints), Alexa Vega (Spy Kids) and Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas), just to name a few, The Devil’s Carnival has enormous potential not only as a highly entertaining film but as a pop culture icon.
An intriguing mix of horror and musical, The Devil’s Carnival is currently on a 32-state national tour where it is being presented live for audiences of the dark film to enjoy. Stars will be present at these events with two showtimes set for tomorrow night at the year-long open haunted house Times Scare in New York City. Even though it’s only April, that’s no excuse to not see a movie that makes you feel like it’s Halloween.
